Colorado altering foster care system to keep more families together

Recent changes in federal foster care policies will modify what happens to families in the foster care system in Clear Creek County and throughout Colorado.

“We need the kids to be safe, but it might look a little bit different,” said Korey Elger, the ongoing manager of the state’s Division of Child Welfare. “Maybe we ask the neighbor whether they’d take someone’s kids. We can’t take kids and parents and separate them — they need to see each other. … As we’re getting foster parents here in Clear Creek County, that’s huge.”

The federal Family First Prevention Services Act, which was passed in February 2018, is being implemented incrementally across the country, and it requires every state to update certain aspects of its foster care system.
