Evergreen firefighters, fed up with what they call a lack of respect and transparency and a breach of trust, are calling for the resignations of Fire Chief Mike Weege and Fire Board President John Anderson.

About 75 current and retired firefighters and former members of the Evergreen Fire Protection District Board of Directors attended a board meeting Tuesday night at which emotions ran high.

Connell O’Brien, president of the Evergreen Volunteer Fire Department, said if the Fire Board didn't dismiss Weege or if Weege didn't resign, he expected a vote of no confidence from the firefighters at their next meeting on Jan. 27.

Firefighters also demanded that Anderson step down from the president position, and if he didn't, they threatened to initiate a recall election. Anderson’s term in office expires in 2022.

Evergreen Fire to hire investigator to examine HR issues

Evergreen firefighters are satisfied with the Evergreen Fire Protection District board’s plan to hire an outside consultant to investigate personnel complaints, hoping an impartial set of eyes will help fix issues that have been festering for 18 months.

However, according to Connell O’Brien, president of Evergreen’s volunteer firefighters association, the volunteers still plan to discuss and take a no-confidence vote regarding Fire Chief Mike Weege at their meeting on Jan. 27.

The Fire District board on Jan. 16 after a three-hour closed meeting unanimously authorized its attorney to find outside firms that can investigate human resources matters, policies and practices. It is unknown how long the investigation will take or how much it will cost the district.
