Jean Johnson’s artistic career speaks volumes as she shattered ‘glass ceilings’

Working as an artist and illustrator in the 1940s and 1950s wasn’t easy — especially for women — but an Evergreen woman helped pave the way for others in that profession.

Jean Johnson, 97, a resident of Elk Run in Evergreen, made a career of being an artist — illustrating books for publishing companies and creating beautiful paintings in both oil and watercolor.

“She led a quiet life, and yet what she has done is so loud,” said Lisa Carter, marketing director for Elk Run. “Women artists today stand on her shoulders. She’s broken glass ceilings, and yet she doesn’t think she did anything groundbreaking.”
