The ice was quick to play tricks on many of the youngsters at Pine Valley Ranch on Sunday morning. As their fishing rods dipped into the freezing water, several were certain they felt a nibble.
Ice fishing was one of many lessons Jeffco Open Space park rangers and volunteers shared during the annual Winter Junior Rangers event. During the event, kids and their parents traveled from station to station, learning everything from ice fishing to ice rescue and animal identification before enjoying hot cocoa and receiving a junior ranger badge.
Volunteer Dennis Velasquez, who manned the ice fishing station, said it’s meant to “just to get them out here and get them in the fresh air and have some fun doing it. Get them more adept to the outdoors.”
