The excitement and enthusiasm in the Evergreen High School gymnasium Saturday morning for the Special Olympics basketball showcase was akin to watching an NBA game.
Both the crowd and players went wild for each basket — and each attempt — cheering on the Special Olympians as if they were basketball stars.
In the end, the green team beat the white team 115-96, the highest score for a showcase game in the event’s seven-year history.
“This is a great community event,” said Maren Schreiber, the Special Olympians’ coach. “There’s a lot of energy, and it’s a great, inclusive event. It shows high school students what the Special Olympians can do.”
