Gary Matson made his mark on Evergreen.

Anyone who drives here has seen the fruits of his labor. Matson, a community leader for 40 years, was instrumental in bringing together community members to create and place what are called the community cornerstones — the “Welcome to Evergreen” and “Welcome to the Heart of Evergreen” signs.

That is just one of his many accomplishments. He was named one of “10 Best Things About Evergreen” in 1995, the Evergreen Rotarian of the Year in 1998 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Rotary in 2005, in addition to other state and national awards.

Those who knew him from Evergreen Rotary, Leadership Evergreen, the Evergreen Area Chamber of Commerce and more met Saturday to commemorate his contributions to the community. Matson, 77, died on Jan. 1 after a battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
