Community gathers to honor fallen firefighter

An American flag, suspended between two fire trucks, fluttered as if in slow motion, often catching the glow of the late morning sun.

Still more flags lined Ward Road in Arvada — some strung from trees and cars, while others were waved with gusto by community members wishing to share support for Dan Moran’s family. Moran, a former West Metro Fire Rescue firefighter, recently died of job-related cancer. He was hired in 2000 and served as a firefighter/paramedic for 18 years before the disease forced him into retirement.

The American flags were a final tribute to the first responder, each greeting the procession of cars carrying Moran’s family, friends and co-workers to his funeral at Red Rocks Church.

Most of those lining the road didn’t know Moran personally, but that didn’t matter. They all agreed: It’s important to show support for those who risk their lives in the protection of others.
