COVID-19 pandemic poses problems for Jeffco Schools as budget adoption approache

As the COVID-19 pandemic has swept Colorado, shuttering businesses and changing everyday life for residents, it’s also taken a toll on Jeffco Public Schools, costing the district anywhere from $10 to $15 million, according to preliminary financial estimates.

While the district estimates some cost savings from utilities and fuel and will ultimately receive a chunk of the $13.5 billion allocated for schools across the country through the CARES Act, it’s also had unexpected costs in overtime for classified staff; revenue loss from tuition programs with ongoing staff expenditures; child care and food service costs; and additional supplies for remote learning.

Now, it’s taking a toll on the district’s annual budgeting process as well.
