Volunteers coming in handy as they stitch facial coverings for essential workers

People around the world — and locally — have taken to their sewing machines and their vehicles to bring homemade cloth masks to those who need them.


Several networks have formed to provide this vital service to health care workers, first responders, and those working in assisted living facilities, homeless shelters, hospices, grocery stores and more. Colorado Mask Crafters is one of the groups looking for more volunteers — both stitchers and drivers.

Cade Beck, who lives on Lookout Mountain, coordinates this group in Colorado and Utah.

“This is coming from … a grassroots movement,” Beck said. “Our responsibility as people who live in this state right now is to do the work, to make masks, to protect each other. Every single mask literally is saving lives.”
