Theater company offers new model for young actors

For years, Tyler Phillips and Jessica Swanson have worked for tuition-based theater companies, where actors pay to be in the show.

For just as long, the pair have been dreaming of another way.

“I feel like I’ve been complaining almost my entire life about the compensation of actors — especially young actors,” Swanson said. “... Many of them are just as talented.”

After years of dreaming, the idea finally came to fruition in the formation of Next Stage, a new theater company in Conifer based on the idea that actors should be compensated for their work and that “pay to play” is a concept of the past.
