Conifer 12-year-old Micah Kipp is climbing the ladder of success on the Colorado

It’s 7 a.m. on race day. A team tent is set up, and morning warmups on the track are ready to begin. The tires and engine are just getting warmed up in time for a qualifying run a few hours later. That’s when, as Micah Kipp calls it, the fun begins.

“You’re 3 inches away from the car in front of you, and the car behind you is 3 inches from you and the car behind them is 3 inches away,” Micah said. “It’s just a straight line down the track, and you’ll pass maybe on every other lap. You’re just waiting for the person in front of you to make the slightest mistake, so that you can jump around.”

That’s a typical weekend in the life of the Conifer 12-year-old. Micah is like your typical run-of-the-mill preteen. His hair is a little frizzy, he enjoys computer programming, and he’s an avid Minecraft gamer.
