NEWS BREAKING TODAY:
A state advisory board has recommended that Squaw Mountain be renamed Mestaa'ėhehe Mountain.
During a vote earlier today, the board voted to recommend changing the name to Mestaa'ėhehe Mountain.
The proposed name would honor Owl Woman, a notable Cheyenne figure who helped maintain peaceful relations between local tribes and new settlers in the 1830s and 40s. She died in 1847 and was inducted into the Colorado Women's Hall of Fame in 1985.
Dozens of Clear Creek residents, people of indigenous descent, Colorado residents and others from out of state have submitted public comment throughout the process, saying the current name is extremely offensive and that it should be renamed in a way that honors the tribes that once lived in the area.
Both written and verbal public comment have almost unanimously supported renaming the peak.
The board’s decision will eventually go to the U.S. Bureau of Geographic Names, which has final say in renaming the mountain.
