A charter bus caught fire in the Pike National Forest this afternoon, but the approximately 50 children aboard were able to escape uninjured, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department.
The bus had stopped because of a mechanical failure at about 4 p.m. between Deckers and Buffalo Creek, said sheriff's spokesman Mark Techmeyer.
The bus driver got all the children off the bus and safely away before flames spread and eventually engulfed the entire vehicle, closing Jefferson County Road 126 for a few hours.
Techmeyer did not know the destination of the charter bus.
