New Fires in Southern Colorado

Per Rocky Mountain Area Coordination Center :

There were 7 to 10 new fires in SE Colorado with 4 becoming large fires. No 209’s were received by time of report. Local reports show active wind driven fire behavior in multiple areas. A complexity analysis and possible Type II team order will be evaluated this morning for Shell Fire


1. Callie Marie Fire: Ft. Carson Pinon Canyon and Comanche NGL. Approximately 4000+ acres with structures threatened.
2. Shell Fire: 6000 + acres Las Animas County near Hwy 350.
3. Buckly Fire: Las Animas County 4000+ acres
4. Bear Springs: Ft. Carson Pinon Canyon 3,000 acres with structures threatened
5. No Name Las Animas County Fire: 15-20 acres.

Remarks for Pueblo Dispatch Center office.

Initial attack activity continues. Red Flag conditions in portions of the zone. The La Junta, Buena Vista, and Fremont Seat Base and Pueblo Re-load Base all open to support fire activity. Heavy commitment of air resources continue. PIDC convened local MAC Group for zone incident prioritization. A complex consisting (Brice, Shell,O-Vmesa) being formed for fires in NE Las Animas Counties. Fire restrictions in place for the PSF/SLV and some of the counties

Significant Events: Crews made good progress on line construction and burnout of interior fuels in spite of difficult terrain. Structure protection resources conducted mitigation actions on outlying structures. The decision on transfer of command from the IMT3 to RM IMT 2A (Richardson) will be determined by 1400 on 6/10/2011.

Remarks: This 209 includes data for both Bear Springs (26,000 acres 50% contained) and Callie Marie Fires (6, 500 30% contained). Injuries listed in block 22 were a minor burn & a dehydration injury (treated & released at hospital). All outbuildings structures lost were in the Bear Springs fire.

Observed Fire Behavior: Primarily interior burning with limited perimeter expansion. Areas of intense heat remain on the North peerimeter with isolated torching.

Planned Actions: Crews will continue improving and holding control line. Control lines will be cold trailed and mopped up within 100 ft. of the line. Engines will support and mop up accessible line on the fire flanks. Initiate line rehap of control lines as necessary.

Significant Events: Volunteer evacuations. Brice Fire now in monitor and patrol status. OV Mesa limited intel, in steep rugged terrain. Good assessment on Shell Fire.

Remarks: OV Fire- In remote, rugged country with no threats identified by county. Lowest priority of the complex. Estimated to be 800 acres. Brice Fire- Reported 100% contained at end of shift on 6/8. Confirmed on 6/9 at ~2,500 acres. Will patrol it on 6/10. Shell Fire- Top priority of the complex. All critical resources needed to obtain objectives.

Observed Fire Behavior: Surface fire in grass with both individual and multi tree torching.

Planned Actions: IR flight ordered for 6/9-6/10 for all three fires. Shell Fire: Continue line construction in Division A and B. Patrol and monitor Division Z. Brice Fire: Patrol mid-shift and mop up as necessary.
