This is the first time I have actually seen lightning hit the static wires on the 230KV power line about 650' from me, and I saw it twice tonight!

Awesome, but I prefer lightning farther away from me than that! lol

It probably hit the ground wire on top tied to the tower. Lightening is amazing stuff.
I saw it hit a tree in my yard last year, blew some bark off the tree about 30 ft. and landed on my driveway. I saw the whole thing too.

Yep, the 'static wires' above the phase wires on transmission lines were first tested and proven on the Leadville High Voltage Test Line, which originated at the Leadville Substation, where I lived at the time

With time and some help to convert 35mm slides, I will post some pictures of a very interesting, to me at least, test project.

I have done some voltage spike tests on electronics too, 2500V is what the military uses on line voltage equipment. The snap always gets your attention. :)

I'd love to see some pics JF1

It was a fascinating test project, 500KV at high altitude, although I was a bit too young to really understand it at the time. The flash, bang, and beautiful corona on the wires were enough to get my attention :) Not to mention the 13KV breakers blowing up outside my bedroom

I'll work on those pics when i get time, of course I'm retired now, so don't have much time

what burned down across from Long Brothers? The winery or the barn? Pinecam lists both.

The barn, based upon what I heard.

HMMM Thank you.
The scanner post seemed a bit sensationalistic. But, I was thinking he meant helicoptors getting water, guess they could have been brush trucks. . . . Info is good
