It probably hit the ground wire on top tied to the tower. Lightening is amazing stuff.

Yep, the 'static wires' above the phase wires on transmission lines were first tested and proven on the Leadville High Voltage Test Line, which originated at the Leadville Substation, where I lived at the time

I have done some voltage spike tests on electronics too, 2500V is what the military uses on line voltage equipment. The snap always gets your attention.

It was a fascinating test project, 500KV at high altitude, although I was a bit too young to really understand it at the time. The flash, bang, and beautiful corona on the wires were enough to get my attention Not to mention the 13KV breakers blowing up outside my bedroom
