Hello, neighbors,
Remember the Lower North Fork Fire that burned 4,100 acres, destroyed 23 homes, and killed 3 people on Mar. 26? The one that was started and not monitored by the Co. State Forest Service? Now is an opportunity to hear some frightening (factual) details leading up to the event. You will hear personal testimony from some of those affected, AND have the opportunity to offer your own words.
We would like to encourage you to attend a public hearing sponsored by the Lower North Fork Wildfire Commission at Conifer HS Monday Aug 13th at 5:30 p.m. We'd like to prevent this from ever occurring again. Please come support all those affected by the fire.
Thanks and hope to see you there!

No problem. Our neighbors aren't done with this by a long shot, and they are going to need our help.
I know it's a long video, but I definitely recommend watching the testimonials and the power point presentation that the residents put together - they look like they are ready for court and did a great job breaking down all of the official reports and poking holes in what went wrong. jf1acai, they might even benefit from your LNFF timeline as well, I'm not sure they have it. I think I still have a copy so if I have your permission, I will forward it on to Beth Semptimphelter.
The testimonies may surprise you. Sharon Scanlan laid it out for the Deputy Attorney General about how much effort and time is really involved in submitting a claim with the state, after he had made it sound like the claim form that the residents need to submit is an easy, quick one-page deal. He also made it clear that, despite the bill that Cheri Gerou had introduced and had been passed that seemed to speed up the compensation process and amounts to each of the families, that no payouts would be made until after all litigation was settled - they have tied the litigation to the payouts that had already been promised. So far 50 lawsuits have been filed against the state, most of them being the insurance companies. So after a fire that was not the residents fault was started during conditions that should have made it a no-go, and was improperly monitored and "controlled" (by that I mean they left it smoldering with very little personnel and insufficient equipment on hand to deal with it based on the weather forecast and ground conditions), they have to continue bearing the cost, financially, physically, mentally, and emotionally, of this event. It's not right. This commission may help, but it doesn't seem to have any real teeth or power, so they're gonna need continued media attention and lots of public support to find answers, and to receive what was promised them.

I am very happy to hear that they had this meeting. I spoke with someone that is on one these wildfire boards and this is what he said they were doing.
I was a bit shocked to see it had not been updated since June. So this meeting makes me feel a bit better, however I think 285bound should give them info from the way they see this. Listening to the scanner and the perspective from that can help them see a complete picture. The need to make changes in policy and procedure, in my view. Letting the government just handle this is probably a mistake because they don't know how to do this but one way. Thanks for the video and the information. I think I am going to contact them.
The only timeline I think matters is when did we hear about evacs and when did they get carried out. They can listen to the radio reference archives to hear that but seriously those evacs got mixed up, I believe. Contact them maybe the timeline will help them. But they need to take this seriously and leave no stone unturned to fix this for the future and really I think the community could help them. You all have been listening and talking to each other for over ten years online. They need that perspective and your hurdle is getting them to realize that. And I truly believe they need to let the community know they are on their own when deciding to evac.
Assumptions should NEVER happen.
I hope they heard loud and clear that 911 was telling people to stop calling. BAD!
I hope they heard loud and clear that people were confused.
I hope they heard loud and clear that evacs were asked for from first responders but they did not get passed on to the public (BIGGEST ISSUE THAT I HAVE NOT HEARD ADDRESSED YET)
I have been watching it in bits and pieces as several of us have been down the hill working on the vote. As a thanks SC I will make a point to visit some of your merchants who advertise here.
It was gutwrenching to watch. They did their homework and like one said the Kuehster residents/owners did nothing wrong and shouldn't even have to be before the commission to defend any of it. I hope the Commission listens closely and comes up with significant changes that will benefit all. And as Ellen Roberts from the Commission said they won't be able to address all that was asked for but only what they have jurisdiction over. So then it means that we need to be proactive and see that changes are made in communications with the sheriff, dispatch, fire dept. etc.
It also means that we need to not get complacent and expect to be taken care of.
