I had the most unbelievable experience today on my way home from work.
As I rounded the corner into Deer Creek Valley on 43, I noticed a very large herd of Elk walking through the big meadow. Suddenly...they began to run. As I approached the 45 mph speed....they were closing in on me to the left. UNBELIEVABLE scene I was witnessing. They ran for about a mile through the meadow and then started up the hill to cross the road. I managed to find a spot to safely pull over and fumbled with my phone. but was able to get some shots of a few of them.
Enjoy my mountain neighbors. This is why we live here.
I suddenly feel an itch in my right index finger and I crave fire roasted elk meat... Fall has to be the best season of all in the Rocky Mountains!
I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

Corruptissima re publica plurimae leges; When the Republic is at its most corrupt the laws are most numerous. - Publius Cornelius Tacitus
We were up in Estes Park around Labor Day and sitting in the car waiting for some obviously agitated cow elk to cross. They were moving rapidly, buy looking back as they went. About 30 seconds later a very large bull came jogging across the road...licking his chops and grunting! We were laughing hysterically....poor cows....
Too bad future generations aren't here to see all the great things we are spending their $$ on!!
That poor guys tongue was hanging to one side. If you blow it up.....he was working hard.
Just to see possibly 75-100 elk running full out in a herd is an impressive site. You could feel the ground moving a bit.
Great pictures Becky! Could you post them in the Photo thread a little bigger size? I would love to have a copy of a few. I've driven that road 1000s of times and only seen Elk maybe 4 times in ten years. Very cool.

Republicans are red, democrats are blue, neither of them, gives a flip about you.
I will try to reload them on to my photobucket.
I tried to enlarge them and crop them so they ended up smaller than I hoped. I will try and work on them this weekend.
