Hello Everyone!

We hope you are as excited as we are at the pending opening (finally!) of our Staunton State Park! We have many activities scheduled for next weekend which you can see here on the CO Parks & Wildlife page for Staunton State Park. www.parks.state.co.us/parks/staunton/Pages/Staunton.aspx
Our hours the first weekend will be 9am-5pm, afterwards they will be 8am-9pm. We are offering free shuttle rides from Elk Creek Elementary and the Mountain View RTD. While dogs (on leashes) and bicycles are welcome at the park, due to expected turnout, we apologize but cannot transport them on the shuttles this weekend.

There was a lovely article published yesterday in the Denver Journal about the history of the land here: www.denverijournal.com/article.php?id=8597

We also have Friends of a Staunton State Park website with additional information here:

Here's a link to our Staunton Park Trail Map. There's about 10 miles of mountain biking and horseback riding paths, over 5.5 miles of hiking-only trails, rock climbing, bird watching, wildlife viewing, and more!

Looking forward to visiting the new park!

One question... I see a Lion's Back trail going to Elk Falls Overlook. Does that let you climb Lion's Head?

Hey pine!

I'm not sure that you can climb Lion's Head directly (it was hard to tell from Jennifer's presentation at the Platte Canyon Chamber meeting yesterday), but I do l know that there is climbing near there that they will close down seasonally for raptor breeding season.

Sorry I can't be of more help - hopefully once the park opens the Friends of Staunton group or CO Parks & Wildlife Staunton Park Manager, Jennifer Anderson, will have some free time to jump in and answer - they are swamped right now getting ready for opening. :)

Some Evergreen Trout Unlimited members will be at the ponds teaching kids to fish this weekend (see you Sunday). This is free and the equipment is provided by DOW. The ponds were well stocked this year.

I emailed and asked, here is Jennifer Anderson's answer:

Currently there is not a trail that takes you all the way to the top of Lions Head.

Sorry pine!

Thanks for checking, SC. I had heard they would have a trail to Lion's Head. Well, at least she didn't say you can't walk off the trail.

And just curious, are the ponds up there pre-existing, or newly created?

pine, I'm guessing a mix of both on the ponds (although probably more natural than man-made ones) after seeing pictures of the construction they did to get the park ready for visitors (it was a huge hole they dug to create the flat parking area). Only a minority of the park is planned for heavy or moderate use, Frances Staunton stipulated in her will that most of the park was to be left natural and undeveloped and the state has to accept those stipulations in order to be awarded the deed to the land, there's even a small portion that is off-limits to everyone because it contains a rare plant.

Denver Post has some great photos from the dedication ceremony yesterday: http://photos.denverpost.com/2013/05/17 ... do-photos/

and there was another story from CBS as well: http://denver.cbslocal.com/2013/05/17/c ... s-weekend/
