When my nieces and nephew were little I'd give my little brother and is wife a break every so often by watching the kids for a few days so they could get away on their own. I quickly discovered that 4, 5, and 6 year olds turn their noses up at kippered herring, corned beef hash, and soft boiled eggs. What to do? Feed them nasty commercial cereals that they beg for? Nah, make some funny shaped pancakes, chuck in a few M&M's, and some food coloring so they got dino pancakes in the color of their choice with a couple nuggets of chocolate for good measure. Add a pile of bacon and sausage with scrambled eggs on the side for good measure. Great meal for the morning that Lil'bro and sister in law returned to pick up the kids!
On the other hand, Bill has some good points about serving breakfast to children. Why not feed them what they want?

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

My (ex)wife and I used to take my nephews and nieces camping with us on occasional weekends. Some of them were known to be finicky eaters, and would tell us on the way out on Friday night what they would not eat.
Our response was always 'If you don't eat what is provided, you will have a hungry weekend.'
They always ate what we provided, and seemed to enjoy it
