Park Co Deputy Accused of Shooting Neighbor's Dog

I just read the article. This is worst that I imagined above:

"They told Brown they saw her next door neighbor, sheriff’s deputy Matthew Jackman, jabbing the dog with a stick before walking into his house, grabbing a gun, standing over the dog and shooting Shiva point-blank in the head.

Later Saturday neighborhood kids found the dog dumped in a ditch nearby with a pair of bloody gloves next to the animal."

Seems here (from the news report) he actually went home got a gun, entered Brown's property and killed the pet in the driveway. What if there had been neighbor children nearby........the enormity of this is obvious. He actually armed, entered a private citizen's property and was "off duty". This is really bad stuff.

IF a private citizen had done this we would be in jail tonight......

Again we await the report subsequent to the invesatigation. Will be most interesting.

Were the shots from the officers duty weapon? Needs to file a report for shots fired?
Why would he be allowed to shoot a coyote on his neighbors property?

PCSO has asked Jeffco SO to conduct an independent investigations. :pop

Seems not to matter if the gun was a "duty weapon" or not.....the gun used by the deputy KILLED the dog as best we can tell.....on a citizens property while he was not on duty.

Am I missing something here ?? Hope the investigation involves non Sheriff's people......regardless where they come from. Cops investigating cops .....well surely you get that.

From the articles I've read (and I know many facts are still missing)...

The dog's owner said the German shepherd was 16 years old and in pain, but not to the point of being put down.

The neighbor(s) who witnessed this said the guy (the off duty officer) poked the dog with a stick, then went to his home, got a gun, and shot the dog in the head from close range. Then he carried the body away and hid it.

And the off duty officer told the owner not to worry about any blood on their driveway since he shot a coyote there. So it sounds like the dog was shot on the owner's driveway.

Pure speculation now...

Maybe the shooter saw a dog lying on the driveway not moving or whining? Maybe he poked the dog with the stick to see if there was a response, but didn't see the response he was looking for and decided to take matters in his own hand? Not that he had any right to do so, IMO.

And maybe he told the owner that he shot a coyote because he didn't have the nerve to tell her what really happened? If he really did poke the dog and later shoot it from close range, I'd think he could of easily determined it wasn't a coyote. But still, why did he drag away and hide the body?

Anyway, it looks bad to me. I can't think of a logical reason for why this happened. Why not just call animal control if you can't find the owner first? I'd like to think a police officer (off duty or not) would think of that.

I assume there is another side to the story and hopefully it will make more sense of this...

Anyone that can't distinguish the difference between a coyote and a GSD needs to have their eyes tested and get some corrective eye ware IMO. On the other hand I know GSDs are loyal and protective of their pack and territory. If the dog charged and was threatening the eventual shooter I might be somewhat compassionate toward the shooter; the shooter is a neighbor and I find it difficult to believe that the shooter didn't know the dog.

IMHO, shooting domesticated dogs is wrong unless and only when stupid owners harbor dangerous dogs and allow them to attack other dogs, people, and/or livestock. Some people shouldn't have dogs or children...

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

The Deputy was in the wrong when he shot the dog or he wouldn't have "hid" it...

About a 1/4 mile away there's a dog that barks all night, every night, all winter and summer...If I lived next to that house that dog woulda been shot a long time ago..Come to think of it, I haven't heard that dog barking lately???

I support the officer
