The morning of 2/18/19, the Cantrells had a neighbor wake them up to inform them that the back deck of the house was on fire. As Jessie rushed to get their young son and 3 dogs out of the home, the fire continued to spread very quickly. About the same time she was exiting the front door, the fire had reached the BBQ area, which caused the propane tank to explode (the explosion was heard from over 2 miles away).
She didnt have time to grab anything but her phone (not even shoes!). Notice the snow on the ground, it was 9 degress when I arrived at the house. Luckily, everyone is ok. The fire made it through most of the house. They are calling the structure a total loss, and the Cantrells have lost absolutely everything. They do have renters insurance to cover some things, but at this moment in time, they have nothing.
We have given them some boots, jackets and a few other essentials but I'm hoping to get a little emergency fund together until they can get things figured out.
Unfortunately, the car was in the garage and Jessie's husband is currently out of town. She doesnt have a car, a wallet, or anything else (including her contact lenses!).

Early Monday morning @ approximately 06:30 hours in the frigid cold, Platte Canyon Fire responded auto aid into Elk Creek Fire Department district for a residential structure fire...
What is very special to note and to recognize about this fire incident is that the fire was initially spotted by off duty #plattecanyonfd Wildand Fire Module Firefighter Kyle Chavez.
Firefighter Chavez called 911 reporting this structure fire that occurred near his home in the Woodside Subdivision.
After calling 911 Firefighter Chavez immediately ran to the house to see if anyone was home or needed help. When Firefighter Chavez arrived no one was outside, Firefighter Chavez knocked on doors and windows to alert occupants, 1 adult exited the house on their own.
Firefighter Chavez heard a child screaming from inside the house, without hesitation Firefighter Chavez ran inside the burning structure and found a 4-5 year old boy which he grabbed and carried to safety outside.
Firefighter Chavez job well done does not touch on how amazingly proud we are of you.

This is the first time in the history of the Platte Canyon Fire Protection District that a rescue of this nature had such a positive and favorable outcome, especially by a 'off duty firefighter' without any personal protective equipment donned.
