I am trying to cut back expenses and with the switch from Qwest; I lost my free One Care protection. Help, anyone out there know of some descent “free virus protection software” that I can download? I don't need much, just enough to keep my computer healthy. I have been searching around and it seems that most of them only have a 15/30 day free trial and they want a cc to start auto charging as soon as the trial ends. I seem to remember that back in the golden day’s hehehe there use to be some good freeware but heck if I can find it.

AVG is one of the top rated free Anti-virus packages. It takes a little manuvering on the website to make sure you get the free version, just read the links carefully. If I remember right, it also tries to install the yahoo toolbar during installation, but it's easy to just un-check the box and avoid that.

I did find that it slowed down the system I put it on - but it's free

I tried the one from dmcdd and it was downloading, downloading... and then after about 30 or so minutes into the process it said fatal error and shut down. Then I had to run out the door... so my journey continues. I will try Argyle's suggestion and see if I can crash that one also in the loading process.

I like Trend Micro Housecall on my old clunker PC's.

It is a free online scanner that you have to remember to use once a week or so.

It is not running all the time, you have to go there manually and run it.

Works for me, and its free and doesnt slow down the old clunker.

I also run Firefox without Java and Java script, and disable flash add-on for faster speed.

There is lots of free software that will give you a virus, you don't even have to look for it!
