More bad news for Jeffco Schools

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4) – The budget problems for students in Jefferson County have gotten worse.

Last month Jeffco Public Schools estimated they would lose $37 million with the cuts to education announced by Gov. John Hickenlooper. Now the district says it will lose nearly $40 million in funding.

Well LH - I well know some local JeffCO schools have depopulated by as much as 1/3rd in the past five years - some need to be closed accordingly and combined with others. Now the non-resident taxpayers will assure that this happens - why should Denver area taxpayers subsidize the schools here that the local economy cannot support ??

Some Denver area taxpayers ARE a part of Jeffco - it's a large and odd shaped county, running through Lakewood and Arvada as well as up past my house. That makes the whole area the county covers the "local economy".

The schools you are talking about that have depopulated that much are not up here in the Evergreen and Conifer areas.

Did you know part of Evergreen in is Clear Creek schools and district?

Please do show me which up here schools are that low - but do make sure the school you are talking about is in Jeffco. Example - Deer Creek is not. Elk Creek is. Neither high school, nor any of the junior highs are that low. Facts and numbers if you please, real stats, not just hot air. And a fluxuation due to birth rates is NOT a sign of the failure of the local economy. It's a sign that for a time, several years ago, people weren't having so many kids. That kind of fluxuation is accounted for all over the country, not just in one county.

And yes, when the school population drops that low, IF the other area schools can absorb the population without increasing class sizes past 30,without having to hold classes in the hallways, library or gym (other than gym classes), then those schools should close. It is better than firing teachers and cutting programs.

It would be nice if CHS and CMS would reduce some - then we can get rid of those temp buildings.

Weird how private and homeschoolers do it on shoestring budget...and so much better!

have to agree trouble. maybe if the economy tanks the schools can get back to basics?

Homeschooling works well because it's very one on one and specifically tailored to the student. (Not to mention a teacher who is very invested in the student) I don't think providing a 1:1 ratio in our classrooms would be very efficient. We've tried to apply Henry Fords philosophy to education and it didn't work. It's time to try something else, and also admit that we won't be able to get a well educated populace on the cheap. It's time we considered the methods of successful models like Finland ans also recognize that schools in poverty stricken neighborhoods are not going to perform at the same levels as affluent ones.

I'm finding it interesting whenever I- or anyone - points out actual facts to Deltamrey, he abandons the thread. What's the matter, Del, not able to admit when you are wrong or misinformed? It's not like I made up the map, you know. After all, it was founded in 1861 - I wasn't exactly alive then.

Jeffco had a population of 533,339 in 2008. Conifer area had approximately 13,000 of that, Evergreen had 9,038. Wondering how such a small portion is responsible for the downfall of the entire county, like Del says it is.

I am neither wrong or misinformed - just avoiding dribble. I am well aware of the geo and demographics (nor rocket science). WOW - a real local old timer - not impressed.....spit, spit.
