A magnificent range of emotions were on display Sunday at the World Championship Pack Burro Race at the 67th Annual Burro Days in Fairplay.
Front Street was packed with hundreds of folks gathered early to watch 21 teams, consisting of one human racer and one burro each, departing from the starting line at 10:30 a.m.
Announcements would be made regularly over a loudspeaker about the progress of the racers running the 29.5-mile course, bringing murmurs from the crowd.
As racers who decided to run the short course (15 miles instead of 29.5) approached South Park City on the trail, the crowd’s numbers began to build again, both sides of Front Street spilling people into the street, with people leaning to their sides to see around the person in front of them.

makes it sound like the smallest group in memory, while in reality, it was 66 teams, which I believe is a new record.
