BOERA Awards Three Scholarships at Platte Canyon High School’s Senior Awards Night on Monday, May 20.

BAILEY, CO (May 23, 2019) — At Platte Canyon High School’s Senior Awards Night on Monday, May 20, board members from the Bailey Outdoor Education and Recreation Area awarded 2019 BOERA Scholarships to three deserving young people. Seniors Emily Huntley, Roslyn Beckfield and Delilah Stewart each took home $750 to put toward their post-secondary education.

BOERA Spokesperson Dave Poniatowski, accompanied by President Nikki Batzer, formally presented the checks at the awards assembly. According Batzer, these annual scholarships are an important part of the nonprofit organization’s ongoing mission in the Platte Canyon community.

“We’re dedicated to giving back to the Platte Canyon School District, which means that our recreational usage fees at the BOERA property directly benefit our kids through grant opportunities and these annual scholarships,” she explained. “Since 2016, we’ve given nearly $8,000 in scholarships to our graduating Platte Canyon seniors.”

BOERA awarded two $500 scholarships in 2016, four $500 scholarships in 2017, and five $500 scholarships last year. This year, the organization increased the individual scholarship amount to $750.

In their scholarship applications, PCHS seniors described their future goals, work experience and community service, as well as their experiences with the BOERA property over the years. Batzer said all three of this year’s recipients demonstrated significant engagement.

“Emily has been involved with trail running at BOERA, and she even placed first in one of the home meets,” Batzer said. “Roslyn is a member of Key Club and has been active in trail work; she also has helped run cross-country meets and school events at the property. And, as part of the Platte Canyon Yacht Club, she’s taking part in an innovative STEM project that is funded by a BOERA grant.

“Delilah is a Key Club member as well,” she continued. “She’s also participated in disc golf, mountain biking and our Bailey Turkey Trot. We love hearing all of these stories, because they confirm that BOERA is indeed offering important recreational and educational opportunities for our kids—and for our community.”

BOERA Scholarships are awarded each spring, using funds raised directly by recreational users of the 75-acre property at Rosalie Road. This unique piece of land, which is owned by the Platte Canyon School District, boasts a world-class disc golf course; more than 5 miles of trails for hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers; and an events calendar that includes the Bailey Turkey Trot, the annual Husky Invitational Cross Country Meet, mountain bike races, disc golf tournaments, and the new Husky Hunt and Community Day.

A daily fee of $5 per person is suggested; while some of the funds will be used for property maintenance and improvements, the majority is returned to PCSD in the form of scholarships and grants. Use of the BOERA property is always free for children ages 18 and under, and for current/retired PCSD employees.
