Behind Closed Doors, Republicans Cheer A Possible Shutdown

And what did the shutdown accomplish? The government will still have to send out new checks that weren't sent out during the shutdown. Instead of spending the money on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday , they'll spend it on Friday, thinking what a great deal it was not to spend the money during the shutdown. But it all evens out in the end.

It's like boycotting buying gas on one day but buying it before or after the boycott.

Nothing accomplished.

Sad to say, but "K" is right. The "unnecessary" federal workers will even get paid for the days they were laid off so the taxpayer will actually get less value for their tax dollar. More paid dollars of vacation for federal workers.

This is probably true because it's what happened the last time they had a shutdown - however, it does not need to be that way- if it were me, no money would be reimbursed for the time the government was unfunded.

It should not be reinbursed- it should work the same way many cities do it- unpaid day off. And the new congress should simply refuse to fund any functions that are not defined in the constitution - they have no obligation to fund anything other than that.

This includes social security and all other entitlements.

Simply leave the government unfunded (with the exceptions) until 1.6 trillion in savings is realized and the budget is balanced.

They could continue social security payments by reducing every payment to what the average payment would be after the 1.6 trillion cut needed to balance the budget.

Kinky, BearMtnHIB. Interesting idea, but I would not want to be the one to tell Grandma that she is getting 20% (or whatever) of her Social Security check. If we cut everyone and everything off, I think it would trigger a depression. Spending by consumers would be slashed, businesses would go broke and more people would get laid off.

BTW - what does your nickname mean?

I'll tell grandma - here's what I'd say......

Grandma, were broke. Actually were worse than broke- were broke and in debt 13+ trillion dollars and were still spending and runnin up the credit card partying like it's 1999.

Were all having to cut back now- including you. You and your generation voted for the very politicians that got us into this mess - and we could never afford the level of government your generation has allowed to develop.

Sorry but your Social security check will need to be about 25-30% less this year, and probably next few years as well. Until this economy of ours creates about 25 million more jobs, we are all in this mess together. Your not the only one - about 30 million of us can't even find work or are under employed.

Those rainy days we always talked about are here grandma, I hope you have saved for them like we all should have because Social security was never intended to cover all your living expenses - only be a supplement for you in retirement. You will need to make up the difference or cut back like most families are doing these days.

Even those of us who do still have jobs are cutting back- it's just the reality of the situation we find ourselves in. Hopefully with these spending cuts - our economy will spring back soon - anyway it's the best hope we have to recover.

One thing's for sure grandma- if we don't cut back now- every citizen will face a sharp decline in the standard of living very soon, every one of us will find our dollars are worthless- our economy will get even worse than it is today.

So get on board granny- it's time for everyone to do their part - even you. You wouldnt want to see your granddaughters living in a van down by the river their entire life would you?

Oh - my nickname is just my location - Bear Mountain Area of Evergreen - and my initials.

LadyJazzer wrote: Yeah, it also means VA & Social Security checks won't go out... I would hate to see those "shoved down your throat."

Suck on that...

The only checks that wouldn't go out would be to people who changed their address during the shutdown or who wanted to enroll during the shutdown. For all of those currently receiving benefits and were not changing anything, the arrival of their checks would not be impacted, and weren't impacted the last time this happened either, but it makes for a nice scare tactic from the progressive camp. Hope that water ain't getting to heavy to carry my friend. It's a long way between here and the next election. You are going to have to pace yourself between now and then........

Do they even send out checks? I figure it was all direct deposit by now. And it wouldn't suprise me to see that SS has contracted out the work to some big, evil corporatr bank that we had bailed out last year.

Government Shutdown is really nothing more than words. The Government really does not shut down. Social Security checks will still go out, they will also still take applications, Postal workers, military, FBI etc will still be on the job. Border patrol will still be on the Job, Law enforcement will still be on the job.

Thanks for that clarification. So basically it affects non-essential personnel?

And don't forget that Congress and the President will still get paid!
