Behind Closed Doors, Republicans Cheer A Possible Shutdown

Republicans in Congress are “serious about trying to prevent a government shutdown.”

Behind closed doors, however, it doesn’t appear they are all that serious:

House Republicans huddled late Monday and, according to a GOP aide, gave the speaker an ovation when he informed them that he was advising the House Administration Committee to begin preparing for a possible shutdown. That process includes alerting lawmakers and senior staff about which employees would not report to work if no agreement is reached.

Republicans have been rallying their Tea Party base with calls for a shutdown for weeks, despite public pronouncements to the contrary. For example, influential Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) has repeatedly said that “nobody wants a government shutdown” — but then spoke at a Tea Party rally last week and cried out: “Shut ‘er down!”

I am for a shutdown.

Since the left cant even find 30 billion to cut out of a budget that is 1.6 trillion over budget- I say shut it all down and provide emergency funding for only those functions specifically outlined in the constitution.

Over a trillion dollars needs to be cut from the budget THIS YEAR.

Definitely one of the weaker spins I've seen recently. I'm quite sure nobody is 'cheering' that the government faces a potential shutdown. The massive debt our government has created is a cancer that must be addressed. A Band-Aid will do nothing except prolong and deepen the coming pain. It's time to get out the scalpel and do some serious, and probably unpleasant, surgery. I think the GOP may understand this, the DEMs appear to be in denial.

BTW, a shutdown would mean that the government can't do anything more against us, pass more bills without reading them, shove them down our throats, etc. Not a bad scenario to me.

And I can imagine it would be a little intoxicating the the TEA PArty caucus of freshman Republicans to tell their supporters, "We shut it down!". Almost like killing the Hydra.

But on other side, I think Sen. Schumer and some others are playing a game of chicken they want to lose. They believe the GOP will be blamed for a shutdown, so they won't negotiate in good faith. Harry Reid hasn't even put a bill to the floor for a vote that can be combined with the passed House legislation.

schumer and reid are scared of the tea party, the only problem is, most Americans don't want anymore spending...yet.. some of these dems and repubs, want to spend, spend, spend! If there is no money in an account, don't write checks..we all would be in jail for writing bad checks, why don't these people get it..many on both sides better watch out in 2012..the people have spoken, and want this madness to stop!

Yeah, it also means VA & Social Security checks won't go out... I would hate to see those "shoved down your throat."

LJ..so you have no money in your account, you're broke..yet, you will go and write a check..knowing you have no money! Please explain how that works in the real world. We are headed for a crisis that we may never recover from. There has to be cut backs on all levels...

What's going to happen is the government may have a brief shutdown then there will be an emergency bill to get it going again and lawmakers will shove special entitlements into the bill, knowing it will pass.

And what did the shutdown accomplish? The government will still have to send out new checks that weren't sent out during the shutdown. Instead of spending the money on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday , they'll spend it on Friday, thinking what a great deal it was not to spend the money during the shutdown. But it all evens out in the end.

It's like boycotting buying gas on one day but buying it before or after the boycott.

Nothing accomplished.

This country and its constitution were created by compromise. This country has existed through compromise.

So, our Congress and the people who support them need to get off their high horses and compromise, if they want this country to continue.
