U.N. Prepares to Debate Whether 'Mother Earth' Deserves Human Rights Status

United Nations diplomats on Wednesday will set aside pressing issues of international peace and security to devote an entire day debating the rights of “Mother Earth.”

A bloc of mostly socialist governments lead by Bolivia have put the issue on the General Assembly agenda to discuss the creation of a U.N. treaty that would grant the same rights found in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to Mother Nature.

Treaty supporters want the establishment of legal systems to maintain balance between human rights and what they perceive as the inalienable rights of other members of the Earth community -- plants, animals, and terrain.

I am all for the environmental movement to kick it into high gear, but this is stupid.

The Bolivian law establishes 11 rights for nature that include: the right to life and to exist; the right to pure water and clean air; the right to not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered; the right to have nature’s processes free from human alteration.

Talk about a day late and a dollar short - just because us humans are majorly altering the landscape, using up precious resources, and otherwise acting like a bunch of lemmings heading for the cliff, doesn't mean that we don't have a right to exist either. Not have cellular structure modified or genetically altered - rofllol sh*t, nature does this itself every day - is it going to be committing an illegal act against itself? Free from human alteration...uh...duh...where haven't we altered nature's processes? Once it kicks us in the ass, it'll go back along its merry way without any notice of our existence or lack thereof. This is useless political grandstanding.

The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river. ~Ross Perot

A living planet is a much more complex metaphor for deity than just a bigger father with a bigger fist. If an omniscient, all-powerful Dad ignores your prayers, it's taken personally. Hear only silence long enough, and you start wondering about his power. His fairness. His very existence. But if a world mother doesn't reply, Her excuse is simple. She never claimed conceited omnipotence. She has countless others clinging to her apron strings, including myriad species unable to speak for themselves. To Her elder offspring She says - go raid the fridge. Go play outside. Go get a job. Or, better yet, lend me a hand. I have no time for idle whining. ~David Brin

The U.N. making these decisions for the entire world is what is ludicrous.

Dude, global warming is going to take global effort. The UN may be derided, but at least it has a framework from which to start action - look what they've accomplished with disease eradication. One gone and another on its way out, using local support.

And I don't believe the Undermining Nations should have any place or influence inside our nation.

I see. And how many global warming books, papers, or reports have you read? Or have you come to this decision from reading the news, which sucks in its coverage of global warming?

I have read ALOT on unman-made global warming, IMO, it's a bunch of money grabbing a-holes that are behind this CRAP.
NOW, does man pollute, YES!
Is it only the more "advanced countries" that are doing something to reduce their pollution, NOT because of the "death" of the earth, but because it's THE RIGHT thing to do.
WE are here as "custodians" of the earth it will do just fine without us, but to tax/fine ANY Country into submisson to the demands of the few, is NOT RIGHT!
And isn't the left that is always telling U.S. that we MUST be equal to everybody else?
It reminds me of when I was in China (one of those that will not be bullied, BTW)
"Everybody is equal, except those that aren't"
FYI, That was from my friends in China.

FYI:
consensus
1a : general agreement : UNANIMITY <the consensus of their opinion, based on reports … from the border — John Hersey
b : the judgment arrived at by most of those concerned <the consensus was to go ahead>
2: group solidarity in sentiment and belief

Usage Discussion of CONSENSUS
The phrase consensus of opinion, which is not actually redundant (see sense 1a; the sense that takes the phrase is slightly older), has been so often claimed to be a redundancy that many writers avoid it. You are safe in using consensus alone when it is clear you mean consensus of opinion , and most writers in fact do so. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/consensus

OPINION, NOT FACT!

Wicked:

Are you teasing me with more nice legs? LOL

I have read a great number of books on the subject of Global Warming, before and after I read them, I then check on the author, and I have come to basically the same conclusions that TPP has so well put forth above.

In other words, he wants to see Global Warming's birth certificate (the long form).
