The residents of the Chiricahua-Peloncillo drug and human smuggling corridor that runs from the Mexican border north through eastern Arizona and western New Mexico are circulating a petition to send to the White House in response to President Obama's recent immigration speech.

"It is with great wonderment and sadness that we listened to your May 10 speech on immigration issues. All of the joking about moats and alligators cut residents of Portal, AZ, to the core as we sheltered with friends or at a Red Cross evacuation site, to survive a terrible fire that still threatens our lives and property, as well as our ecotourism-based economy," the letter reads.

I think his moat remarks are stunning in their stupidity and will come back to bite him in the butt.

I heard the speech- It's a perfect example of Obama's arrogance and stupidity about the subject.

I don't know how any democrat can stand by while Americans are losing jobs to under the table labor, while our crime rate by illegal alien increases, and while 28 million unemployed stand by waiting for a job market to improve and at the same time were have been invaded by 30 million illegal aliens who didn't even ask permission to come here.

This shows the entire country his disdain for America's sovereignty and the states rights to protect it's citizens from a criminal and economically destructive invasion. He thinks he's riding high now with an improved approval rating due to the Bin Laden killing- but this will wear off and his ratings will return to the dismal levels they were at a few short weeks ago.

I hope independants remember - actually I hope republicans remind the country- just around election time - what Obama thinks of American jobs and America's sovereignty rights.

Disgusting!

tell me again BearMtnHIB what the Republicans have done to stem illegal immigration and what their future solutions are for this problem.....if they have a solution I sure would like to hear it. I don't see either party addressing it.....but perhaps you can set me straight on this....does the Republican house have a bill they are trying to pass on immigration? If a Republican candidate for president has a solid plan to deal with the illegals and border security then I would think he/she would have a leg up on Obama in the election....but so far I haven't heard of one.

OK...on topic, I didn't like what the Prez said the other day, though I thought it funny.....I doubt it will hurt him since so far no Republican has come up with a solid solution to the problem of illegal immigration....until they do, any republican who uses this against Obama is going to be asked...."so what is your and the Republican's plan to deal with illegal immigration"? If he/she can't answer that question then Obama is going to look like he had every right to make the statements he did.

Archer- if you would have asked me about this problem 5 years ago under Bush- before 2008- I would have said it's not a big priority. Due to the economic conditions that have transpired since then, I have changed my mind 180 degrees on this issue. In a good economy where jobs are plentiful, cheap labor can be of assistance in keeping prices from rising fast.

I still would not want illegal's coming here - but in a good economy we can absorb immigration (legal immigration).

But the times have changed. The economy has changed. Illegal labor is now hurting our economy, and costing us jobs- the same jobs that 20 million unemployed Americans need right now. Republicans do have a plan- they want better border security- they want to start sending Illegal aliens back home when they are discovered. Arizona had a plan- because Obama is doing nothing.

Your assertion that Republicans (or more correctly) conservatives don't have a plan is not correct. They have been calling for our immigration law to be enforced- states have started to act on their own. That IS a plan. We need better security at the border- we have been calling for that too! That is a plan.

There is a plan- you just can not acknowledge that.
Obama sits there and not only does nothing- he mocks America as it calls for his help!!

And that's Obama's plan. Can you still support that position while your neighbors are are unemployed and trying to figure out how to feed their families?

I'm sorry, but that was a very biased post....Obama is doing no more and no less than Republicans...if you want to complain about border security than hold your own party equally at fault. Sure the Republicans have asked for more border security, as have the states.......Arizona especially has been very vocal on this issue, long before Obama became president. Is either party ready to shell out the money it would take to truly secure the border?.....are we willing to send our military to the border to accomplish this?

BTW....Obama was not mocking America, he was mocking Republicans, he really needed to mock the entire government for not having the guts to put money and resources behind this issue. We should have addressed this a decade ago.....but it is politically unpopular. Quite honestly I have heard from both sides, we must secure the border....but no plan is ever put forth that actually does that. If I missed the Republicans plan, detailing how we would secure the border and what it would cost, please point me to it. I am well aware that the Democrats don't have one either. As a part time resident of AZ this issue is very important to me, and I am sick to death of everyone saying we need to do something about it, but never actually detailing how.

I'm not happy with the route AZ has taken, they spend millions of dollars going after what few illegals they can catch, but no matter how many they deport thousands more are coming the other way.
