Choosing Between RINOs and Libs

For several weeks now, I’ve been involved in email debates with some of my fellow conservatives. They’ve been on my case ever since I pointed out that a Republican-lite is preferable to a Democrat. I swear, if this were the Middle Ages, they’d have me burned at the stake for heresy.

It’s their contention that it is better to vote for a third party candidate than for a Republican In Name Only (RINO). In response, I have pointed out that a third party candidate can’t win the presidency, and while wasting your vote on one can have the short term benefit of making you feel good about yourself, in the long term, you’re merely making it easier for the liberal to win the election. So while there’s nothing to prevent a conservative casting his vote in 2012 for a Libertarian or a Constitutionalist, in reality he’d be helping to re-elect a left-wing radical named Obama.

Oh, I totally agree with your fellows who say it's better to vote third-party. The farther to the right, the better.

When election day comes and the economy is still in the toilet (which it will be), there will need to be some serious brain washing or drug taking for anyone but the die hard liberal sheep to vote for Obama.

Economic policies that have been tried and failed will be the main factor against Obama, so even a RINO will look good to conservatives if that's the only choice they have.

I'm curious what Obama's new sales pitch will be since hope and change has crashed and burned.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

I agree with the OP. 1/2 a loaf is better than no loaf. Too bad McCain was our 1/2 loaf and he still lost.

I think it will be pretty easy......simply say "hey, you voted in a bunch of Republicans in 2010, what have they done for you so far?"

He lost because he tried to pander. We want authentic candidates. Picking Palin was fatal, for many of us on the right having her as VP was a non starter. I'm responsible for the effects of my vote and I was not willing to risk having a President Palin on my conscience. Own your beliefs. Don't pretend to change them to win votes.

Exactly, Archer. Since he has no successes to campaign on what are his options?

lol Or in 2008, you voted in a Dem House, Dem Senate, and Dem President who all did so poorly that the House was taken back by the Republicans and the Senate lost six seats to the GOP.

But I expect Archer and Barack will continue to blame Bush for everything, rather than accept responsibility.

No need to go back to Bush for blame (though he does hold some of the blame for where we are) the Republicans campaigned on their own change.....and what have they given us? nothing.

I will vote again for Obama, though he has disappointed me on what he was able to accomplish. What I have seen so far on the Republican side is a simple desire to destroy, not to build.......I see plans to eliminate or greatly weaken those programs that I believe contribute to making this country great, they favor one class of citizen.....the wealthy and the corporations, over ordinary Americans. Right now the Republicans are the party of what this nation cannot do....not the party of what it can accomplish. Whenever a candidate starts off with "we can't" they have already admitted defeat.....that is no way to run a country, and I will not vote for them.
