Another perspective on immigrants

Ever since wining it all in the NBA, Dirk Nowitzki has been reanalyzed. Deemed a failure on the big stage, he turned it all about with his performance this year. Luke O'Brien takes another perspective on the matter and concludes with this gem about immigrants that I felt many of us had forgotten.

No, when it comes to that necessary yielding quality, Nowitzki has them all beat. Without question, his is the greatest triumph of softness in NBA history. And in the end, isn't that the really successful American story? You know, the one about how the immigrant assimilates and changes us for the better, not the other way around

We may not always like what immigrants bring to the table, but no matter where they come from, some will always change us for the better. Your thoughts?

Too bad. No one has any thoughts. Obviously not controversial enough.

Hey Rockdoc. Nice article. Thanks for posting it. I think on 285Bound it might be too controversial. The idea that immigrants could (and do) have value has been lost in all the ideology.

Legal immigrants are welcome, not so for illegals.

The silent majority will be silent no more.

Alot of legal immigrants have helped make this country what it is. We may have never made it to space and it not been for a German immigrant, there are thousands that came here seeking the American dream and were outstanding citizens helping this country build. Now the illegals thats a whole different situation. We end up with the bottom feeders. (my opinion). Like you RD, my mother is a naturalized citizens. Got hers in 1957. She came from Germany.

My mother, maternal grandparents, and paternal grandmother were legal immigrants (paternal grandfather's side was here before the US was). The crap tossed around that people don't like legal immigrants is BS.

Maybe it is because they prefer terms such as 'undocumented workers' instead of 'illegal immigrants' that some can't tell the difference?

Even illegal immigrants that are willing to assimilate have achieved a lot in America.

My mother immigrated to America when she was 15- I am not against immigrants coming here- just don't come here expecting entitlement and don't come here illegally without asking permission.

This country was built with immigrants- but at times in our history we have had to shut down the flow. This is one of those times where we need to turn it off- we have about 30 million Americans who can not find work right now, so our economy is not in any shape to accept more people right now.

When we are back to full employment- we can think about inporting more humans here- until then we need to ask that those who came here without permission get on the road back home.

I've had a real issue with illegal or undocumented workers. The link above is about the very illegal I've railed against. After reading his story, I may have a different perspective. No matter where you go in life there are always exceptions. He is one of those exceptions, a illegal whom I would gladly embrace as he truly has done much for America in the hope that America would somehow embrace him.
