His math is no fuzzier than your fuzzy conservative assertion that liberals, I assume you mean all liberals since you didn't specify some, should never be in charge of our nations money. Betcha I could find a conservative or two, or more, that can't add 2 + 2. Or maybe more than a few who think that if you take medicare and SS away from seniors they can still survive. It doesn't get any fuzzier than that.

I have noticed how you are always careful to specify "some conservatives" when you are generalizing. rofllol

towermonkey wrote: It is not a separate issue - it is the main issue. We are trying to balance an upside down budget on the backs of those without the wealth via SS cuts and Medicare cuts. I don't know about you, but my paycheck reflects a significant "contribution" towards my retirement every couple of weeks via these deductions. That contribution is going to be towards nothing but a bankrupt system. Meanwhile, the wealthy are getting tax cuts because they can afford lobbyists. If 99.9% of America is going to have to give up a portion (at least) of their benefits that they contributed towrds for years, then the dame 0.1% can pony up some money too to balance the budget. Ask yourself where Jim Rogers fell into that breakdown - 0.1% or 99.9%.

Well TM, I just disagree, wealth distribution did not cause the deficits. You are chasing out of control growth rates in govt spending by throwing more taxes at it with fewer people paying. I do understand payroll taxes, being self employed I pay 15.3% for my bennies. SS does have a poor rate of investment return for most except the poor. Medicare is the opposite, we have only paid for about 1/3 of it by the time we start collecting. Neither are funded or managed with sound actuarial methods.

As for tax breaks for the wealthy, I think a complete reform of the tax code with few or no deductions and simple rates 10, 18, 28% would remove the lobbyists influence. I would also let the cap gains tax go to 18 or 20% for everyone. 15% seems too low to me.

Something not shown in your charts is charitable giving by the wealthy. Gates and Buffet and others have pledged to give away most of their wealth. And Jim Rogers is pretty smart, started with nothing and became wealthy. I recommend his books, good reading. He has a good understanding of global economics and different country's failed systems. He is pretty critical of the US too.

How did this topic get so off-topic? LOL. Must be VLs fault. Mods?

Well thanks TM, ditto!
I read Investment Biker first. The second was his trip around the world in a yellow mercedes, forgot the title. (adventure capitalist?) But its on his web site, just google jim rodgers.

He has a good understanding of different country's economics/politics by his personal travels around the world.

BTW, I don't idolize this guy at all, he is somewhat of a wealthy capitalist hedge fund speculator type. I just think he has a unique perspective and knowledge of world economies due to his travel and investing experience.

And he's bringing our boys home, not bad, I definitely feel safer-Obama has done in 2 years what George Bush Jr and the Republicans couldn't do in 8.
