Good article. When they made all refrigerators energy star compliant, they saved 10's of power plants. Look at it in that way and something needs to be done. I am looking at my direct TV box and there are 7 big lights on it. and I don't even have it turned on. Then, looking around just my living room there are lights on appliances, that are turned off mind you, on eight appliances. There is no need a for a light on when it is turned off and I don't understand why they can't stop it.

O Good Lord!,
Leave everything plugged in & turned on all the time, use it all up as fast as possible.
FORCE people to come up with other forms of energy!!! or live without either way is good with me.

I've discussed this power down/off issue with both Dish and Wispertel. I have my stuff switched by power strips and a wall outlet switch by the front door. I turn it off when I'm gone mostly for lightning concerns, 2nd for power savings.

Have had problems with Dish when the DVR is off for extended periods (months) the software doesnt update, and channels don't work until I call them and they reset the smart card. Same with Wispertel, if their router loses power and has to reset IP addresses, they tell me my router has to be powered up or they lose me. They told me never turn it off, Same for Dish. I still shut it down for lightning concerns.

Many devices have a lower power sleep mode, after several hours of inactivity.

Dish DVRs do run hot, I had mine shut down a few times for over temp. So they must be power hogs!

If you want to be, press one. If you want not to be, press 2

There is a device that you can hook up that shows you how much electricity is being used at any given time that beams wifi to your computer. You can identify the power hogs in your house with it. When you turn on a fan, it will show you how much electricity is being used and how much it is costing you in real time.

Great, even when you try to be good, they screw you over. Maybe Xcel owns the cable box/dvr buliding companies.
