Atop TV Sets, a Power Drain That Runs Nonstop

26 Jun 2011 12:05 #1 by Blazer Bob
"Those little boxes that usher cable signals and digital recording capacity into televisions have become the single largest electricity drain in many American homes, with some typical home entertainment configurations eating more power than a new refrigerator and even some central air-conditioning systems."........

Thanks for the info. We unplug as many appliances as we can when not using them. I'm not sure what we can do about DVRs, since they record shows at all hours and can't be unpluggedat. because of that.

From your article, it looks like the Europeans have a solution that we're not using:

"Similar devices in some European countries, for example, can automatically go into standby mode when not in use, cutting power drawn by half. They can also go into an optional “deep sleep,” which can reduce energy consumption by about 95 percent compared with when the machine is active."

My brother was telling me about a device that you hook up near the main breaker box. He swears that his has saved him a ton, said something about making the electric clean or something like that.

Anyone hear of this?

I have no clue what he is referring to. But there is a device that can save you $$ on your electric bill. It is the wall receptacle that equipment is plugged into. Unplug it, and it doesn't use any energy.

This may involve some inconvenience on your part, so best to test it before you are expecting to rely on the unplugged device.

No, but my guess is it involves motor start up. There are a couple of EEs that post here. Hopefully they will see and respond.

Edit: did a little looking and found this. Is you brother referring to his house or a business?

SinuMEC is a new and innovative range of 'next generation' soft starters that give the user so much more than just a soft start and soft stop to the induction motor connected to it. The SinuMEC motor starter saves the user energy whilst the motor is being run and in many cases it can be shown to have a payback time of 2 years or less. Why use the old type of softstarter when you can be using a SinuMEC and saving your company lots of money?

No motor connected, I will email him and see if I can find what it is.

I read the article and was amazed, should start unplugging the box when I go on vacation.
