:pop You still haven't defined who the poor are, when should people start paying taxes on income? Current levels, or should more lower income people be spared? Or should more poor pay?

Have a nice life.
Ditto for anyone who starts out with the premise that any $ not paid in taxes is stolen from the government.
The former East European countries are doing very well with a flat tax of 10%, no exceptions. Greece has much higher tax rates but much more cheating, and look what is happening to them.

and what exactly do you want the poor to do? how can they do more? what do you think the poor are/aren't doing to need to do more? I think Orin Hatch needs to go grocery shopping BY HIMSELF and get out with real people and see how his opinions pan out

The current American poor have better safety nets and benefits than at any other time in history. They own big screen TV's and get enough to eat that obesity is the biggest health problem in America right now. And if they work, get an earned income tax credit to bring them even more money.

I don't suppose it occurred to you that a FEW of them have big-screen TV's because they bought them when they had jobs...before their jobs got shipped overseas to people that will work for $1-a-day?
Nah... Sorry... Yeah, they must all be the (mythical) Reagan-era "welfare queens"...
I have heard several congressmen say that rather than taxing the wealthy (which won't raise any real money), what they are saying is that we need to help the poor get jobs, and the lower income people get better jobs so they all have work and money and then those millions of people's minor tax contributions will far outweigh taxing the wealthy and on top of that they will all have jobs! So they are saying get the poor to work rather than just tax those more who employ them. THAT is what it means to have the poor help out.
Example: Get the poor some jobs and 3 million of those people paying $1000 a year in taxes will be the same $3 billion that the Dems are going for from the top 1% who employ a majority of those 3 million. Then we will have 3 million more WITH jobs who can pay a minimal tax and it makes a lot more sense to get that $3 billion that way rather than taxing the employers. Lower unemployment and still raise the same revenue.
Obama was on this morning saying there are 1 million construction workers out there needing jobs if we only had projects. WHAT THE HELL WAS THE $840 BILLION FOR? Oh yeah, hahaha, ooops, they weren't as shovel ready as we thought. :bash :bash (fire his ass already!!!)GET THEM READY YOU F'N MORON IF YOU ARE ANY LEADER AT ALL!! We just gave you almost a trillion dollars to get things going! What happened to it while you were out golfing 72 rounds?
