I have been asked if I make money off of invites, the answer is no. The confusion might have arisen because I mentioned app engine which is something completely different than Google+. For info about Google App Engine, go here:

Because it's in beta right now and they don't want to overload it. Google did the same with gmail when it first came out. Google+ is so popular that it already has 1.3 % of the customers that Facebook has after only being out for two weeks. Facebook has a lot to worry about if this trend continues.

I dont think you need an invitation. Just google, google+, your computer will get stuck for a long time if you try to take the tour. I do not have enough time in the day to keep up with all this social networking. want to talk to me? pick up the phone.
