I can't figure out why it is not clickable:

What’s also important, but not evident, on this chart is that Obama’s major expenses were temporary — the stimulus is over now — while Bush’s were, effectively, recurring. The Bush tax cuts didn’t just lower revenue for 10 years. It’s clear now that they lowered it indefinitely, which means this chart is understating their true cost. Similarly, the Medicare drug benefit is costing money on perpetuity, not just for two or three years. And Boehner, Ryan and others voted for these laws and, in some cases, helped to craft and pass them.

To relate this specifically to the debt-ceiling debate, we’re not raising the debt ceiling because of the new policies passed in the past two years. We’re raising the debt ceiling because of the accumulated effect of policies passed in recent decades, many of them under Republicans. It’s convenient for whichever side isn’t in power, or wasn’t recently in power, to blame the debt ceiling on the other party. But it isn’t true.

Mam we have talked about this. Obama and the Dems had 100% control of ALL 3 houses for 2 years and could have gotten rid of those tax cuts. But instead when they expired after complaining about them for 6 years and all the liberals in the naiton blaming them for our debt, Obama and the Democrat controlled House and Senate voted to extend them and keep them. So NOW they are Obama's tax cuts. Bush's expired!

It doesn't appear you actually *read* the article.

I am at this point:

Enough is Enough: Invoke the 14th Amendment and end the crisis

How many times did GW or Reagan raise the the debt ceiling? 7 times an *18* times for those two.

I am sick to death of the partisan crap. And this time it is the republicans. God forbid they admit THAT.

100% control? what planet have you been living on Viking?........having a majority, even a filibuster proof majority does not equal complete control, especially when that majority includes a couple independents (they are called independents for a reason) and some blue dog democrats. Not unlike the situation in the house now...the Republicans have "complete control" of the house....yet Boehner cannot get enough Republican votes to get his plan to pass yet.

What I find so hard to understand is why any congress person would want the US to default on it's obligations......this is money already spent and the bill is due. This is money spent by Republicans and Democrats, and maybe it's time the Republicans started taking some responsibility for how we got where we are. The Democrats haven't always been in charge, and certainly Bush knew what a veto meant. I agree we need to cut spending, I agree we need to scale back on our obligations....but those are future intentions. The bill is due now and the responsible thing to do is pay it. period.

This is like some guy saying to the credit card company.....hey......we kinda over spent last year, my wife spent more than she should have, and I kinda lost track of my own spending, so even though we have $10,000 owed on your card, we're only going to pay $9,000 of it because that is our debt limit this year. Please write off the extra $1000. We'll get back to you if we ever decide to raise the limit. How well do you think that will work? And wouldn't you viking, as a conservative, say to this guy that he and his wife spent the money, they owe the money, and they should be responsible and pay the money? Let them work with a budget next year......and into the future......but pay the damn obligations they have already accumulated.

But you guys hate to talk about totals! The TOTAL debt went up only $1.9 trillion under Reagan and $4 trillion under Bush. Obama is shooting for over $6 trillion in 3 years and the CBO said with his plans we will need at least another $5 trillion. SO what if they raised it 50 times for a total of $1.9 trillion. You are comparing that with the $2.3 trillion that Obama wants in one shot that they said will only last us till the end of next year? No comparrison! HE HAS SPENT ENOUGH!!! If he can't figure out how to run things with more than any other President and he is only 2 1/2 years into it then he doesn't need anymore!!

I'm right there with you MsMAM....unfortunately I don't think this is about paying our debt.....this is all about bringing Obama down. I hope Obama finds a way to just do it, and tell the Republicans "better luck next time, this country will NOT be held hostage by your political ambitions".

Two things. I looked back and can't find any filibusters when the Dems controlled. And second, the Republicans have passed 2 bills and Reid won't even bring them to a vote. They are the party of no. SO the R's are trying to compromise MORE and now are losing some Republican votes. But they have passed bills. All the Dems say, just like you just said, raise the debt ceiling and taxes NOW, and we can figure out spending cuts later. Later never comes. And they will need another $2-3 trillion in a 2013. It has to stop NOW!! The D's HAVE to give in on spending!

MAM, breathe! I was responding to your comment about Bush's tax cuts. And secondly, are you going to respond to my response to your post? How the number of debt ceiling increases don't matter as much as the ammount. Obama is SO BEYOND out of control with spending. Please let him go around congress and raise our debt without any balanced budget in over 2 years and no spending cuts! He will be finished in 2012!

Viking, right now I don't care how much it went up under any one president.....I don't care how we got where we are ....the issue is ......does the United States stand by it's obligations or doesn't it? Very simple....and so far the Republicans are saying no. If they fail to raise the debt limit, the United States becomes known around the world as a country you cannot trust, as a country that does not back up it's word, as a country that puts politics over it's obligations. Not to mention our credit rating goes down, causing everything we do going forward to cost more, making it harder to cut costs in the future. And interest rates will go up, stifling new businesses and most likely causing further layoffs as companies cannot borrow money as cheaply.

All in the name of "defeat Obama"

Come on, you're smarter than that. The senate doesn't do actual filibusters anymore.......no one wants to stand there and talk for hours/days........they threaten to do one, and deals get made, and bills change until they get 60 votes.

The Republicans have passed one bill.....the second was to be tonight, but they couldn't get their act together. And why bother....just like the Republicans said they wouldn't pass Reid's bill.....the Senate has said they won't pass Boehner's bill. But in your mind only the Dems said no.......nice spin Viking. And you are misrepresenting the Dems bill....there are no new taxes in it. Please educate yourself on what is going on. There should be taxes in it if we are really serious about cutting our deficit in the future....but for now that is off the table. The original Dem bill reduced the deficit by 4 trillion over 10 years, R's said NO.....the Rep's bill had 2.5 trillion in reduction, D's said no, the Dem's countered with 2.7 trillion, R's said NO.....they prefer the 800+ billion......really, who here looks serious about tackling both the spending problem and the deficit reduction? Democrats!
