Denver ballot proposal would mandate sick leave

First off, do you agree with forcing private companies to give sick days? And should there be allowed to be a law to force private businesses to do this? And second, if this passes, do you think it will drive businesses out of the city limits?

I don't think any businesses will leave because of it.

I would guess that raises will be smaller, or pay cuts possible if it passes though - "You've got sick leave now - that's your raise".

9 days for a larger company? That's 3% of a work year. 3% would be a pretty good raise in this economy.

Good point. I guess people will just lose their raises to even it out. To be honest, I don't think it will pass with voters but it is liberal denver so you never know. Voting in more government regulations and control over the private industry seems to be a pattern with them.

9 days sounds excessive and I do think businesses would use it as an excuse to move, or open new branches outside of Denver.
The new Denver mayor seems to be against it on Mike Rosen's show.

Maybe at least 5 days required of PTO for all jobs.

If you were a business looking at moving to Colorado, with and hiring 100 employees, at an average wage of $50k, this new law would add $150,000 raw to your costs. Would you even consider Denver? I guess this law will be good for those of us outside of Denver. More growth away from the main city!!!

I don't think too many companies would move to Jeffco or Centennial just because of this, but I think new companies will think twice.

Denver isn't very good at keeping businesses around...I WAS one of them.

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.

But if you are paying people 50K a year, they are already probably getting 2 weeks of PTO so I don't know if the company would be required to award them nine more days a year.

Will Denver lose its fast food and janitor services? I could imagine a ring of fast food joints and restaurants setting up across the Denver county lines

The intention of the law is to require this in addition to vacation. The effect will most likely be the reverse. People will lose vacation time and it will become PTO or sick time. I guarantee employees in Denver who vote for this aren't going to be happy when what they thought was going to happen doesn't happen.

Yeah, actually getting time off when you're sick, would be soooo disappointing... (Not to mention, all those customers and other employees who would be spared from getting sick if another sick employee comes to work because they can't afford not getting paid.) Shameful!!

So LJ, would sick time in your perfect world be just PTO (take off for any reason) or must you actually be sick?

My issue with "sick time" instead of just PTO is it causes people to be democratic presidents...ooops, I mean liars. :Whistle
