Rep. Cory Gardner Tells Constituent Concerned About Outsourcing To Just Find A New Employer

Matt Finkelstein reports on a tete-a-tete between Rep.Cory Gardner (R-Colo.) and one of his constituents that evidently went down at a Monday town hall meeting. In the exchange, the constituent expresses her concern that she might lose her job to outsourcing that's aided and abetted by tax-break incentives. Gardner's solution? Find another job!

CONSTITUENT: But what about my job? I want to keep it. Not new jobs. I want to keep my job.

GARDNER: Well, make sure that your business is successful. We need to make sure that we're —

CONSTITUENT: They're successful by training those Vietnamese and I want to learn. They make me work 45 hours a week and they don't pay for training anymore. They used to pay for two weeks of training every year. They quit paying for training three years ago. But they're training — they're giving these people technology, they're giving them what I want to know, and I don't have time to learn.

CONSTITUENT 2: And they get tax incentives to do it.

GARDNER: To go back to the question, if that company can succeed, I would hope that they would share their success with you. If they are not, maybe that's not a great company to work for.

I don't think they can outsource the millions of burger flipping jobs created by Odumbo.

LJ this guy needs to go away, the sad part is how true it already is. How many companies when you call thier so called customer service line is actually located here in the US. Not many. Seems more and more companies are leaving and outsourcing thier jobs.

Actually more and more US companies are bringing customer service jobs back on-shore. With high speed broadband becoming more available, VPN access, and viable work at home programs, the big highly managed call centers are going away, especially at the "retail level".

I deal with a lot of customer service centers and I think the jobs are coming back to America too.
And the consumer can do something about this, the calls are recorded and if enough people request American operators, this will just increase.

Anyone else enjoy the "Peggy" customer service commercials?
Sometimes the people from India or the Phillipines I can understand, but not often enough.

He didn't say find a new employer- he said maybe that's not a great company to work for. And he could be right.

Geez- talk about spinning what sombody says into what you want to hear!

Companies vary in quality- some are going to go the cheap route even if they could still be profitable overpaying Americans. Some companies would rather keep the jobs here. The government provides incentives to move work overseas, in the form of taxes, regulations and labor laws.

Americans will need to adjust to the fact that there are people all over the world willing to work very hard for much less money than we are used to making here. They also live in areas with little regulations, less taxes on businesses and no minimum wage laws. This is what we are competing against now. If you don't like it- you'll have to get a skillset that is in higher demand. You can be stubborn about it- but you may find yourself out of a job.

Ah, another "compassionate conservative" speaks....

The constituent tells his congressman "I have a concern", and the congressman tells him, "Go get a new job"... What "spinning"? That's exactly what happened. Yeah, like "go get a new job" when Wal-Mart's is getting 4,000 applications at one branch for 700 jobs... and the guys applying are engineers, and PhD's... How much education do you need to go get to work at a Wal-Mart?

"I've got mine--sorry you don't--screw you." The GOP mantra.

Once again the Left wants to bash the evil corporation, but if you worry about losing your job and your benefits suck, walk! If enough people desert those employers, they will have to raise wages and improve benefits.

Didn't you know SS- the left wants to use the force of government to make all employers equal. Walk? What walk- these people think they have the right to demand whatever they want in an employer, like Walmart. Force them to pay more, force them to provide medical coverage- even for a minimum wage opportunity.

No wonder vietnam looks like a good place to move the company to! By the way- Vietnam is increasingly turning away from socialism and leaning into the free market way of business- just like china is.

That makes sense in a strong economy, but when there are six applicants or more for every job? Sounds like a ticket to prolonged unemployment instead.
