What is poverty in America

As to the article - the census does NOT distort the poverty index - it MERELY reports the numbers people put down on the census forms. It is the users of the information - like the writer of that article - that distort the numbers. The writer is full of crap from the get go.

As to RT's crap:

Free healthcare? where would that be? Please do point it out in this community, because there are people here that actually need it.

Let's see, according to statistics, over 64% of the state would qualify for benefits, yet less than 13% get them. Yep, clearly ALL the poor people in the state are getting benefits. And all of them have cars to go there? Please do show me that stat.

Up here, if you don't have electricity - which for most of us equals running water as well - your can be declared as living in an unfit home, lose your kids to foster care, get fined, get evicted(even if you own the home)and all sorts of other fun things.

Sorry that American poverty doesn't meet your standards of what poverty is. May you be damn lucky and NEVER have to suffer it either. But you don't have to be a bleeping ass about it.

CB - wrong. It's actually rather damn easy to starve to death in this country. Hie thee down to Civic Center park in Denver, have a chat with those folk. I've often taken extra lunch when I'm down there so that someone can have something to eat. And you can tell the difference between those lying and those telling the truth. It is unbeliveably easy, in a nation that is supposed to be so damn wealthy, for people to starve to death. You just don't hear about the homeless folk that die, cause that's non- news. No one cares about the homeless - simple fact.

Local Historian, I wrote FREE EMERGENCY HEALTH CARE .... hospitals, by FEDERAL LAW, must accept all emergency patients with or without insurance.

Do a little research and find out why illegal hispanics live in Denver County and not in Jeffco or other surrounding counties?

It's call DENVER HEALTH ...and other benefits.

The homeless are in Civic City Park for one reason....there are benefits. You don't see the homeless in Bear Creek Park...why is that? You don't see homeless in other parks?

I know this first hand....There are several "homeless" folks who get over $1100 per month in federal government benefits (have 10's of thousands in savings) ...but live in the shelters...and pan handle for spending money. There are many illegals who file IRS returns and get $5000 per return, deposit the money and send it to Mexico.

Homeless go where there are benefits and transportation....the homeless in Denver ride the trains for free (illegally) to get to their corner along the ramps of 1-25....wait until the west leg of Fasttracks opens... you will find homeless from Golden to Denver on the exit ramps of 6th avenue and 70.

The poor in America are better off than they have ever been. 20% are on food stamps right now, unemployment benefits last for years now.

We will always have the poor, but a lot of them have got there due to their own failings, drugs, drink, making poor life choices.

And an ever-growing number of them are there through no fault of their own, and were laid-off so their jobs could be outsourced to people who will work for $5/day....

Give me a break.... The number of the "new poor" who got there due to "own failings, drugs, drink, making poor life choices" is probably infinitesimally small... Unless of course you have a source for your usual shoot-from-the-lip prejudices....?

I alwys love these anecdotal stories of wealthy "homeless" people gaming the system yet in all the time I've worked with shelters I have yet to run into one. I have found out about men I've grown fond of who have frozen to death, died of pneumonia, been beaten or died in other needless ways because they are homeless, and for all the people out there who claim to be followers of Christ there is no help for them. These false anecdotes are used to kill the compassion that God uses to call us to help our brothers and sisters who have fallen into want.

I think that it is the impression, right or wrong, that the government will take care of everyone in need (using the $$ we pay in taxes), that has reduced individual compassion/charitable donations.

Only if you're a sociopath who believes if they don't "earn it themselves" we shouldn't take care of those who can't.... Yes, those who can't, SHOULD be taken care of with our tax dollars.
