Niether..I choose my ears in a split second..As i'm reaching for the corn my hands gravitate to the biggest plumpest looking ones, then as my hand comes back to bag it I feel for firmness throughout..Sometimes they are half in the bag when I toss them back unto the pile. The process takes only 2 to 3 seconds and it works 99.9% of the time.
The biggest plumpest ears of corn are those that are the oldest. Way past being tender and sweet. You've been missing out on the best corn all your life VL.

I did not know that...You think I would, I grew up near a corn field behind the Old Folks home. Thanks PM...Maybe I have just been "getting lucky" all these years..

I think that field of corn was 'field corn'.
I think Lil Precious was too!
We (The AHS football teams) practiced football there, great memories and I remember stealing duck eggs from the little pond they had there..1967,68? The farmer drove us down in his car and called our parents..My parents just laughed.
Ever heard of Peaches and Cream corn, VL? If you know someone in the midwest willing to overnight some to you, pay them whatever they ask. It will be some of the best, sweetest corn you have ever eaten.
One of the few things I miss from Iowa, besides roadside veggie stands and being able to drive from one end of the captial city to the other in 30 minutes, 45 on a snow day.
I used to get from Golden to Aurora on I-70 in about 20 minutes. The traffic here is great, better than any semi big city in the world. Why i'm I not suprised that you picked the best thing about Denver to complain about LH?
I always check for broken eggs and have no issue with it, but people that shuck out (not just peek at the tips) dozens of ears of corn and then throw 90% of them back irk me. Corn gets stale when it's shucked, so shucking them in the store is basically vandalizing the store's merchandise. And most of the people I see doing it seem to be rejecting ears for no discernable reason. With all the chemicals used to raise corn, I haven't seen a worm or a corn smut in 20 years. Once in a while the end will not be filled out all the way to the tip, but ya know? It's really no big deal, certainly the "risk" of this doesn't justify trashing half the corn in the bin because you think you deserve perfection.
