Americans flee north to Canada for economic opportunity

TORONTO, Canada — Usually, you hear stories of people fleeing to America, not the other way around.

But the jittery state of the U.S. economy is driving an increasing number of its citizens to seek better prospects north of the border.

Americans are the latest economic refugees, and they’re heading to Canada.

Though he describes himself as both patriotic and a conservative, Michael says he’s lost faith in U.S. leadership — “on both sides of the aisle” — for failing to stem the excesses that led to the collapse of Wall Street, and for the current political brinkmanship over the debt ceiling.

“I’m looking for a country where the first role of the government is to protect its citizens,” he said. “It looks to me like all [of Canada’s] three major political parties seem to have proven that they are much more responsible than our leadership.”

Workers like Michael are drawn to Canada’s lower unemployment rate — 7 percent in July compared to 9.1 in the U.S. — and sustained economic strength in major centers such as Toronto, which alone attracts an estimated 100,000 new arrivals a year.

Hmmm I didn't see anything in that article that said "Liberals are fleeing..." (as subject-lined in the other thread on this...) Oh, wait... I forgot who posted the other thread. Truth doesn't figure into it...

You know what else Canada has besides a better unemployment rate?.... Universal health care.... I guess the argument that universal health care "kills jobs" is so much bullsh*t. Yes, it appears that Canada DOES TAKE BETTER CARE OF ITS CITIZENS.

On the other hand, I'm flying to Toronto next week to close a deal on selling something to the Ontario government (from here in the U.S.) that is worth well into 8-figures... So, I guess we still have stuff that they want....

This is an actual news article with actual facts. The other discussion is a parody, since they have nothing to add to the discussion about this article which points out Canada is in better shape than the U.S.

"if you like it so much, why don't you move there" response in 5, 4, 3....

Countries swing back and forth. A decade ago, the Canadian dollar was plunging and the US was buying up Hockey teams, now the players are returning north, the Atlanta Flames recently.

 Guess who runs Canada? A Conservative Prime Minister. Maybe if America ever elects a real conservative to be POTUS, we will get on the right track too.

Thomas Sowell: There are no solutions, just trade-offs.

For those who aren't aware, the Conservative Party in Canada is much different than the Republican Party (Conservative) in the U.S.

Canadian conservatism had always been rooted in a preference for the traditional and established ways of doing things, even as it had shifted in economic, foreign and social policy. It is for that reason that unlike in the conservatives in the United States, Canadian conservatives generally preferred the Westminster system of government.

Actually my son was talking about taking some work up there so I recently did a little research on the legalities of working in Canada. My take was that, unless you are prepared to actually become a Canadian citizen (and that's not an easy thing to do unless you are a doctor or have some special skill) or intend to marry a Canadian, your work prospects there are limited. You can go there for a short while and work, but then you have to go.

So if it's the objective for a person to go there and make some money on a "job" and then head south of the border then great. But if you are looking for a "career" in Canada, you should think again my friend. Unlike us, our Canadian neighbors have figured out how to stem the tide of undocumented and unwelcomed visitors coming from the south.

Correct- they have elected a conservative and they seem to like it that way after years of electing liberals.

Many people don't know- that Canada has strict immigration laws and they enforce those laws. An American can't just willy nilly pack up their stuff and move to Canada. Canada does accept high value skill sets for jobs that they can not fill with it's own citizens. Getting approved for living & working in Canada mainly depends on if you've got the kind of skills they need.

For instance- a 50 somthing "Journalist" probably would not qualify because there are plenty of Journalists up there already, but a Civil, Mechanical or Petroleum engineer would be welcome.

Income taxes in Canada are about 55%, so the job would have to pay pretty well to be worth it.

A 50 somthing year old who's only qualifications are 35 years of experience in "natural herbs" would probably be declined and if found on the wrong side of the border- deported.

Canada has a smart immigration policy- keep out the rif raff and only accept those people who are an asset to Canada right from the start.

A good lesson for us to learn.

Wow... So, income taxes in Canada are about 55%....and they have a 7% unemployment rate, universal health care, and take care of their citizens better. I can see why anyone would want to move there.

Yes... Good lessons to learn.
