Americans flee north to Canada for economic opportunity

Most patients who come from Canada to the U.S. for health care are those whose costs are covered by the Canadian governments. If a Canadian goes outside of the country to get services that are deemed medically necessary, not experimental, and are not available at home for whatever reason (e.g., shortage or absence of high tech medical equipment; a longer wait for service than is medically prudent; or lack of physician expertise), the provincial government where you live fully funds your care. Those patients who do come to the U.S. for care and pay out of pocket are those who perceive their care to be more urgent than it likely is.

Myth: Taxes in Canada are extremely high, mostly because of national health care.

In actuality, taxes are nearly equal on both sides of the border. Overall, Canada's taxes are slightly higher than those in the U.S. However, Canadians are afforded many benefits for their tax dollars, even beyond health care (e.g., tax credits, family allowance, cheaper higher education), so the end result is a wash. At the end of the day, the average after-tax income of Canadian workers is equal to about 82 percent of their gross pay. In the U.S., that average is 81.9 percent.

But that is average. People who are healthy in the US will get to keep more of their income than those in Canada who have to pay whether they take care of themselves or not. It just is how you like to live. The Canadians I have talked to have a different mind set. It is like they are programmed to accept big infrastructure products as a good thing even though they have little say about it.
And they buy their milk in bags! How wierd.

Their grandparents come here for major medical as using the government plan there you need a lawyer to decifer what is covered. They also complain that they could buy newer equipment for the farm and newer vehicles if they weren't taxed to death.
Their daughter lives here and married a man here and is an American citizen now.
She always laughs and says that Americans should think about what they wish for, and the grass always seems better on the other side of the fence.

And I have some friends in Vancouver, BC, who say it's great and they love it...

Hmmmmm....

I guess my friends cancel out your friends.

No, they don't... Actually, two live out in a remote area on the coast, and one lives near the Delta Ferry area.

And what difference would that sort of hair-splitting make? You think if you can shave it down close enough you can find some way to be "right"?

Wayne, the problem is some on unemployment can't do any needed job elsewhere either. Many of the recent additions are decent workers who were laid off or the company went overseas to cut costs. If we continue to educate foreign students for the same costs as out-of-state students we'll never gain any ground.

I was trying to establish if people were treated differently by living closer to the needed services.

You were trying to establish if there was some way you could jump on the discussion and say, "SEE! That's why you're wrong and I'm right", which is what you always do. Spare me your faux-outrage... And you can KMA too...

LJ should follow Rosie O'Donnell's lead and try hormone therapy for her anger issues.
