Arlen after 9/11 happened this country as a whole came together, we all cried together, helped each other etc. That faded as the days, weeks etc passed. We went to war etc. We are no better now that we were before 9/11. So your comment "I cannot see how this country has come together because of 9/11" makes no sense and is not true. Yes that togetherness faded like I said, but for a short time this country came together and it was great.

It doesn't matter that some of your shipmates have a different view of politics, if they have a different skin color, or if they don't hold the same religious beliefs as you. When the real danger has passed and everyone starts to become more of an individual again those differences re-emerge because there is no immediate threat to the existence of the ship and her crew.
Why can't Americans comprehend that we are all in this together? Because many believe that there is no immediate threat to the existence of the nation and her population. Some even believe they can continue doing the same things over and over again and somehow get different results.
Pass on my thanks and respect to your son for his service and my best wishes for a safe deployment and return. It is hard enough to go through all of the emotions and stress when you are the one being deployed, I can only imagine how hard this must be for a father!
Your example is extremely well put and very true. I actually have been in 3 collisions at sea and one almost. I have the picture of the ampih coming along side for fuel, got caught in the screw intake, and when the backing bells on her, and the left rudder all began to react, I could shake the guys hand on the gator. But we never hit. Thanks for comments on my son I will let him know.
I guess I'm lucky - I work with a team of people who do work together as a cohesive unit to get the job done. There's teasing, and humor and a lot of raw language - what happens when you're building something. Even though some folk are new, and some folk work together all the time, there is caring, sharing and understanding. The group is small - I think total, there's 25 of us, with 12-15 working together at any given time. It may be for a silly thing, but the point is that even with diverse ages (I'm one of the oldest), diverse educations (former museum folk, show folk, service job folk, several former military and a former cop) and diverse lifestyles (OMG RT - even homosexuals!) we all come together and work together as a team. We even socialize as a team.
This would be nice to see from society at large, but some people just never know how to part of a team.
Navy, You know that our heart and our prayers go with your son. Please get us an addy and we will get those care packages heading his way. If he can't be home....we will bring home to him.
How about 285bound adopting his unit. I would be happy to coordinate the efforts and get those packages out to him....
What do you say 285bound.....can we adopt Chris's unit?
