WHY IS IT

Why is it that it takes a national disaster or an attack on our country for this country to come together. Why is it that it takes for something to happen for US as Americans to join hands and help one another, or to be civil to one another, to offer assistance to one another. After watching just a few minutes of the 9/11 rememberance on TV I had to turn it off. I get reminded daily of 9/11. With my son deploying to Afganistan this week, I deal with alot memories, of his first deployment getting medavaced out due to an IED, of my tours up in the Gulf, of the funerals I have attended. Now I have to deal with another deployment, of wondering and hoping. But what really makes me wonder is why it seems it always takes something major to happen for this nation to come together, leaving politics out of it, not worrying about race or religion, but just coming together to assist and help out. I guess I just don't get it or maybe I am just not smart enough to understand it.

I think it is largely a matter of perception. According to http://www.volunteeringinamerica.gov/national an average of 62.7 million Americans have been involved in volunteering using 2008 to 2010 data, providing 8.1 billion hours of service. And this doesn't count those who just quietly assist their community with no affiliation to recognized volunteer organizations.

Volunteerism makes the news when large incidents occur, but it is quietly going on all the time.

IF I understood the post, I believe it was a question of a LARGER scale (the species,as a whole).....it is my belief, it is inherent in our nature. Modern mankind has lost connection with its beginning, and it is ONLY when an event (beyond human control) unfolds that you TRULY observe the nature of the species......as one cool movie character opined(Jeff Bridges in Starman)....."What I like most about your species is that you are at your BEST,when things are at their worst.".....Pretty much says it all.......JMO

If you have ever been at sea on a ship when there has been a collision you suddenly become a part of a team who's only mission in that moment is to stay alive. It doesn't matter that some of your shipmates have a different view of politics, if they have a different skin color, or if they don't hold the same religious beliefs as you. When the real danger has passed and everyone starts to become more of an individual again those differences re-emerge because there is no immediate threat to the existence of the ship and her crew.

Why can't Americans comprehend that we are all in this together? Because many believe that there is no immediate threat to the existence of the nation and her population. Some even believe they can continue doing the same things over and over again and somehow get different results.

Pass on my thanks and respect to your son for his service and my best wishes for a safe deployment and return. It is hard enough to go through all of the emotions and stress when you are the one being deployed, I can only imagine how hard this must be for a father!

I can explain it to you but I can't understand it for you.

I cannot see how this country has come together because of 9/11. Take a look at some of the other threads on this forum to see what crap the liberals on this board are posting. They are totally devisive.

This might be the funniest post I have seen on 285 in quite some time...
