While President Obama's newly unveiled deficit-reduction plan has drawn much attention -- and criticism -- for targeting the wealthiest Americans with new taxes, it also aims to overhaul the retirement benefits for U.S. military members.
Just weeks after the Pentagon proposed scrapping the military's traditional pension program, Obama released a plan Monday that calls for reexamining the retirement system that "provides generous benefits to the relatively few members who stay at least 20 years and no benefits for the roughly 80 percent of servicemembers who stay less than 20 years."
It's amazing to me how little attention is given to certain postings that are in reality very serious and should be discussed.
Those who serve, who volunteer to put their lives on the line to protect our Freedoms, whether you agree with the decisions made by their commanders, still deserve the support of a grateful nation. Where would you be without them?
After the fact? These men and women have already sacrificed for this country to give you and yours the Freedom you enjoy and possibly take for granted. I can see merit in possibly cutting Defense Spending, etc. but not the retirement for those who served.
Thanks, though for putting forth your opinion. As you notice, since it you did so in a matter of debate, there is no argument, or name calling, just for the sake of having a different opinion.
Actually agree with Nmysys on this one. there is plenty of fat to cut before talking about retirement benefits. Of course, I always take the side of people when this argument comes up (Wisconsin).
I agree that in the current economic situation we need to look at cuts everywhere.
However, I do not believe that benefit reductions/cost increases for military personnel and their families should affect those who have already made their commitment under the current rules.

I think this new plan would have to be grandfathered in. Since the majority of military enlistees never make it to 20 or 30 years, I don't think it will affect recruitment that much.
The current system says you only get the big payout after you serve your full hitch, this is more fair for the combat veterans who may only serve until current hostilities come to an end. There will be a big coming drawdown and a lot of veterans are going to be forced out with no benefits. Is that fair?
