Well! In the last month, I was robbed by the Federal & State Government with an effective 37% tax rate on my commission check...which cost me four figures....and today my car was stolen by JeffCo!
Yep, I purchase a car last month, paid a the sales tax ...and today I purchased the tags for an additional $ 500. Again, the taxes have cost me four figures AGAIN!
I estimate that if I keep the car for five years...my total tax bill on this car will be approximately 15% of the total purchase price of the car ....and it's depreciating asset. My effective tax rate more likely to be closer to 25% when you factor in the depreciation.
I just plated a $35,000 car in Park County for $285...No emissions, no sales tax, no nothing and the vehicle isn't even in this state..I think Jeffco saw yuou coming RT. You look like an easy mark
I don't like Colorado's vehicle ownership tax. It is too high, (compared to most states) and discourages purchasing a new, cleaner, more efficient car. I'll never buy anything newer than 3 yrs old in this state. JMO

I hate it when your right!
Funny thing is....four month of Park County roads your $ 35,000 will need $ 3,500 in repairs after hitting pot holes every 10 feet. I guess we're even.

The taxes you pay also go down as the car ages and depreciates, so next year you won't be paying as much, and so on. On my 2006 sedan, bought new in 2007, the taxes have come out to be 5% of the total purchase price over the last 5 years.

Thanks SC, add in your sales tax.... what was the total percentage of the vehicle taxes?
Sales tax didn't go to JeffCo - I bought mine in Denver - and the rest is for the state, and it only gets paid once when you purchase the vehicle, right? I'm not going to argue about there being too many taxes levied, because there are. But the point of your post, as based on your misleading title, was that JeffCo is raking in all this dough and they're not. Each level of government wants their share of the pie, and the taxes add up, but you were exaggerating about JeffCo's percentage - it's not even close to 15%, much less 25%. Now if you want to talk about duplicate taxation, that's another topic!

I didn't exaggerate the taxes. It's incredible how much bite the government has in our paychecks - directly and indirectly. I agree - it's double taxation. I paid a sales taxes at a full retail sales tax rate followed by a "property tax" which is really a license plate tax. Now we can understand why illegals only drive 10 year old cars.

Roger that, I needed a new car (actually it's used car) as my other car is dying a slow death.
The other crazy tax is car insurance.....holy crap! I just added a teenager...and if you think taxes are a robbery...the insurance industry is robbing us too - and it's legal.
