I was surprised to see a 9NEWS story the other day about OWS and two people who had to be treated for hypothermia. The statement from the group was that they tried to set up tents to stave off this kind of thing, and it was the police's fault because they refused to let them set up shelters.
Now, this isn't a statement about OWS, but just in general... if you're putting yourself in a situation in which you much break the law to keep yourself from getting hypothermia, and then the police tell you that you can't break the law, so you stay and get hypothermia anyway... you have no one to blame but yourself.
Between 1979 and 2007, the top 1 percent of Americans with the highest incomes have seen their incomes grow by an average of 275 percent, according to the CBO study (PDF below).
In comparison, the 60 percent of Americans in the middle of the income scale saw their incomes increase by just 40 percent during the same time period, according to the study, which was based on a combination of IRS and Census data.
To put the growing disparity of income distribution in a slightly different perspective: Between 2005 and 2007, the top one-fifth of earners in America earned more money than the bottom fourth-fifths.
