.

McAllen, TX high school assigned students the task of memorizing and reciting the Mexican national anthem and pledge of allegiance grabbed headlines across the blogosphere on Monday. It naturally grabbed the attention of many parents. On Monday morning, then, Glenn interviewed the father behind the story, William William’s daughter, Brenda, is the 15-year-old girl who refused to participate in the assignment and recorded it.

William described how he was surprised when Brenda told him about the assignment, how he contacted several school officials and never got any promised calls back, and even revealed another disturbing case of some shocking claims.

“The indoctrination of this stuff is going on all the time down here,” he said. “And also last year she was told in her Spanish class that this land was stolen from Mexico, yada, yada, was told to be quiet through the class.”

McAllen ISD: Nothing wrong with Spanish class that riled parent

McALLEN — An assignment for a high school Spanish class that made students recite the Mexican pledge of allegiance and national anthem upset a parent.

“I don’t see a connection between all this Mexican history, and the allegiance and the national anthem … and learning Spanish,” William E. Brinsdon said in an interview with conservative radio host Glenn Beck on Monday.

Under the state’s curriculum standards articulated in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills for Languages Other Than English, high school students are expected to gain knowledge and understanding of the culture where the foreign language they learn is spoken.

The student is expected to:

>> demonstrate an understanding of the practices (what people do) and how they are related to the perspectives (how people perceive things) of the cultures studied; and

>> demonstrate an understanding of the products (what people create) and how they are related to the perspectives (how people perceive things) of the cultures studied.

The school district maintains there was nothing wrong with the lesson.

“This was a single lesson, not an indoctrination,” according to a statement sent after a Monitor inquiry.

“It is important to note that every year, a teacher’s lesson plans are reviewed and modified for their appropriateness. This class will fall under the same protocol,” according to the statement.

All students in McAllen ISD recite the U.S. Pledge of Allegiance every morning of every school day, according to the district’s statement.

(The "story"posted by Nmysys also got the guy's name wrong: William E. Brinsdon NOT William Williams. According to the story, he is married to a Mexican National and doesn't speak Spanish and she doesn't speak English)

Since it was a Spanish class maybe they should have studied the Spanish national anthem instead of the Mexican anthem.

McAllen is on the border with Mexico, not Spain. Mexicans speak Spanish, they don't speak Mexican.

The version of Spanish spoken in Mexico is nothing like the Spanish spoken in Spain or in many other Spanish speaking countries. So was the class Mexican culture or a Spanish language class?

Who said they were learning castellano Spanish?

For the answer to your question, I"m reposting what I copied earlier from the article I linked to:

The question is a valid one Wayne. If it is a Spanish language class why isn't it the Spanish national anthem and culture that the students are learning? Why not Brazil, since they speak the Spanish language as well, or Costa Rica, or Cuba, or Ecuador? For crying out loud, Puerto Rico, where Spanish is a de jure official language, is a US territory. Certainly there is value in learning about their culture in a United States school?

I wonder if the teacher was born in Mexico?

The left is angry because they are now being judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin.
