How Target Figured Out A Teen Girl Was Pregnant Before Her Father Did

So Target started sending coupons for baby items to customers according to their pregnancy scores. Duhigg shares an anecdote — so good that it sounds made up — that conveys how eerily accurate the targeting is. An angry man went into a Target outside of Minneapolis, demanding to talk to a manager:

Wow! Very interesting and a little unsettling.

Very, I have some issues with Target already. And I hate those kings and safeway cards. They are only used to mine your personal info.

With my Kings card, I also buy supplies for the place I work. I think they must be amazed at how much coffee & soda pop I drink. Plus a lot of cleaning supplies and air fresheners.

Probably think I am a wired compulsive house cleaner.

I love one of the comments on this page, "gives the Target "Bullseye" a whole new meaning. "

I wonder how they actually use that data from which items we purchase. I always use my Safeway card when making purchases for charitable organizations. They probably think I have a house full of cats and an uncontrollable addiction to canned corn.

I get coupons from Kings for items that I buy regularly. It creeped me out when I first got them, but now I don't mind. If there is something I buy that I wouldn't want anyone knowing about I'd use cash. I've never gotten coupons from Target and use my credit card there always -- but it's not a Target cc. Perhaps that's why. If I did get coupons from Target they would probably focus on all the sox and kid stuff I get in the dollar section for the grandbabies.

We use our Kings and Safeway card all the time and never get special coupons in the mail.

I don't have a problem with them tracking what I buy in this day and age if it means they can offer a lower price well then that is marketing and they get me into the store.

With gas prices going up I am sure that so will the prices of groceries (funny how they never go down when gas prices drop) we use the cards to save every penny possible and I buy all my groceries on a cash back credit card and pay it off at the end of each month.

You never get the coupons in the mail from king soopers? Check with customer service, maybe they have your address recorded incorrectly. Those coupons are quite beneficial.

Will check with them I would think they have it correct as we use the home shop service at times when things are crazy.

Old news, didn't they pretty much ask for there personal info to be public by giving it to random strangers in exchange for pennies.

I did not think most people actually signed up for those cards. I remember when they started around 20 years ago and I have always said no, why on earth would you let someone have so much info on you.

Then I figure if you get the card, why on earth would you give them real info, just take the card, put down joe blow at 123 screwme st. and get the discounts.

I bet people who signed up for these cards also assume falsely that these companies are not looking up your facebook page and mining data there too without even buying it.

I usually google everyone I meet, all phone numbers that call me, etc. If I do it, just think of what they are doing....

I guess it will be like the insurance GPS that you will be getting soon enough. Now there's data!
